The paediatric IR fellow will provide services at both the Westmead and Randwick campuses of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN).

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (Sydney) is the largest pediatric hospital in New South Wales with approximately 350 beds. It provides clinical services to approximately 100,000 sick and injured children from NSW, Australia and across the Pacific Rim each year. ​At the Children’s Hospital at Westmead (SCHN-Westmead) campus, Paediatric IR service is currently offered under Medical Imaging department. Annually about 1100 Paediatric image guided interventional procedures are performed under the service which include a wide range of image guided procedures such as biopsies, drainage of fluid collections, central venous access, angiography and angioplasty, biliary and urological drainage procedures, gastrointestinal access, management of post-surgical and post-transplant complications, management of vascular anomalies and paediatric neurointerventional procedures. The IR service runs regular clinics for pre- and postoperative assessment of children referred to the service for procedures. In addition a dedicated vascular birthmarks program is also served by active involvement of paediatric IR. The service is equipped with a biplane angiography unit, and a high-end ultrasonography unit in a dedicated angiography suite, in addition to access to a 64-slice CT scanner for CT-guided interventions, and a fluoroscopic unit for II guided procedures. The staff includes experienced IR consultants with primary focus on paediatric IR, dedicated paediatric angiographers and nursing staff with experience in paediatric image guided procedural nursing assistance, while regular anaesthetic services are provided by perioperative service.

At the Sydney Children’s hospital (SCHN – Randwick) campus, the service is provided by the Randwick Campus Medical Imaging Department which offers both paediatric and adult IR services to SCH, POWH and RHW. Approximately 300 paediatric interventional procedures are performed every year. The Campus is also a key interventional neuroradiology centre for NSW and covers paediatric INR. As well as performing a wide range of image guided interventional procedures, the department provides a vascular malformation service which includes multidisciplinary clinics and a weekly sclerotherapy list. There are 5 adult interventional radiologists within the department, two of which hold the EBIR qualification and one experienced paediatric IR consultant. Equipment within the department includes a biplane DSA suite, with a second single plane suite planned for installation in 2018. The department also hosts a dedicated interventional US room, fluoroscopy room, and interventional CT sessions.

This position provides the opportunity to develop advanced paediatric interventional radiology skills with a clinical focus to the practice and is suitable for not only those intent on pursuing a career in paediatric interventional radiology (either solely or in combination with paediatric diagnostic radiology) but also for those trained in adult IR desirous of developing advanced IR paediatric skills. Opportunities exist for some paediatric diagnostic radiology exposure and/or elective rotations in adult IR/INR as part of the one-year program.

  1. The exchange programme applies to late radiology trainees or recently board-certified radiologists (within the first three years after boad certification) residing in Europe.
  2. Demonstrated interest in Paediatric Radiology, with 6 months or more experience in Paediatric
    Radiology. Other relevant subspecialty radiology training may be considered.
  3. Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
  4. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development.
  5. Proficient English language skills are required. The level of English is established by the AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) and English requirements may change yearly, we recommend to check this website. For your information, the requirements at May 2023 are: IELTS (academic module) with a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
  6. Demonstrated ability to teach, and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior
    Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
  7. The short-listed candidates will be invited for an online interview.
  8. An active ESR membership is required.

Duration of Fellowship
and Funding

The fellowship will start early February 2024 and will last for 12 months. The fellow has to ensure his/her availability for the exact period stated as any postponement is not possible.

This fellowship will be supported by a salary provided by the training center according to the standard compensation arrangement for Australian registrarsDuring the period of the training the fellow is responsible for covering his/her expenses (including travel and accommodation) and his/her own health insurance with the provided salary (about 180,000 AUD) which will be paid fortnightly directly by the training center.

PRIMARY PURPOSE
  • To provide higher specialist training in paediatric interventional radiology techniques, clinical care, teaching and research in order to facilitate optimum delivery of paediatric interventional radiology services at Westmead and Randwick campuses of Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN).
  • Paediatric Interventional Radiology focuses on providing minimally invasive image guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for children referred to / being cared at the Randwick and Westmead campuses of the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN).
  • The PIR postgraduate fellow will be responsible for participating in the provision of optimum image guided and IR services to the patients of SCHN in accordance with procedure manuals, WHS Radiation Safety and ethics guidelines.
  • The key focus of the position will be on Clinical, Research, Educational, managerial and clinical leadership responsibilities.

Clinical

  • Participate in the provision of optimum interventional radiology services to the patients of the SCHN
  • Ensure that appropriate standards for imaging guided procedures are met, in compliance with NSW Health Department, SCHN, Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures as well as Professional and Government accreditation guidelines
  • Provide optimal, safe, high quality and cost-effective patient care and be accountable for own clinical practice.
  • Ensure appropriate clinical presence, close supervision of all procedures and staff (including registrars) and timely reporting when rostered on clinical duty Liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary health care team when planning and performing procedures on patients
  • Comprehensively assess the individual needs of the patient and undertake appropriate clinical course of action.
  • Document and communicate all relevant clinical information, and provide supportive care.
  • Acquire the professional knowledge and skills pertaining to the correct use and maintenance of equipment in the clinical area.
  • Participate in ward rounds and post procedural follow up care
  • Participate in an on call roster for an effective Interventional Radiology service outside normal hours, and to ensure accessibility and timely response Participate in quality control procedures and quality assurance activities in the Radiology Departments within the network
  • Participate in clinical and educational activities of Hospital, Network and Medical Imaging Stream and Radiology, including continuing education and quality assurance activities (eg. facilitated incident monitoring, sentinel event management, peer review, morbidity and mortality meetings and audits) Implement and monitor the recommendations of the SCHN Clinical Governance committee using the appropriate channels for action.
  • Maintain and develop professional skills in accordance with “best practice”. Respond positively to the cultural beliefs and practices of patients, their families, and their support and fellow staff members.


Education & Research

  • Ensure appropriate accreditation, certification and credentials for participation in clinical and teaching activities
  • Initiate and undertake research programs appropriate for a tertiary institute Prepare and present scientific presentations and papers for professional forums. Leadership

  • Assist, advise and support other staff in the performance of their duties. Establish and maintain effective communication with all members of the health care team in order to achieve continuous and coordinated patient care.
  • Support an intellectual environment that supports effective teaching, learning and research in Radiology, and to encourage these activities. This also involves participation in clinical meetings of other Departments and clinical teams.
  • Assist with the orientation of new staff members to the department by providing mentorship wherever possible.


Managerial and advocacy

  • Identify and utilize appropriate resource personnel from within own department as well as from other relevant departments for advice or clarification of normal practice, guidelines or policy.
  • Assess the priorities of the workload throughout the day and plan accordingly taking into account patient workload and skill-mix of staff.
  • Provide protection to the patient, visitors and staff in accordance with WHS and Radiation Safety guidelines.
  • Maintain effective communication channels between all staff within the department.
  • Provide advocacy for safe and appropriate use of medical imaging and radiation for procedures pertaining to PIR

Certification

After successful completion of the one-year training the fellow receives a certificate from ESR/ESOR and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. In order to receive this, the fellow must present a written report about his/her work and activities during the programme.
