The Owl - ESOR's new mascot
Latin: Strix, nuctea
The Greek owl symbolises the inner sight which penetrates and lightens the darkness of ignorance. The owl is sacred to the Greek goddess of learning and wisdom, Athena, and is depicted on Greek and Roman currency as a symbol of status, intelligence and wealth.
In ancient Egyptian, Celtic, and Hindu cultures the symbolic meaning of owl revolved around guardianship of the underworlds, being the ruler of the night, seer of souls and keeper of the spirits.
The owl’s eyes see through deception, external appearances and illusion, revealing hidden truths. Beliefs hold that the owl puts an end to doubt and offers better vision and clarity of the truth of events, and all aspects of learning.
